Play for Today was launched on BBC1 in October 1970 and ran until 1984, commanding audiences of several millions. It is generally recognised to be one of the important series ever of British television dramas, responsible for over 300 single plays of often striking originality and cultural importance.
In acknowledgement of the forthcoming 50th anniversary, the Forgotten Television Drama website has launched an occasional series of blogs on the series, focusing in particular on some of the less well-known or critically-neglected productions that deserve more attention. The first post is on The Right Prospectus (22 October 1970), the second play in the series which, despite being the work of the well-known playwright John Osborne, has remained largely unseen since its television repeat in 1971.
